You are amazing. You have have absolutely ruined Harry Potter fan fiction for me because no other fanfics are as good as this one. Like, seriously, this is better than most novels I’ve read.

Besides the obviously stunning jily storyline, I really like how you have written the Sirius/remus relationship. I honestly don’t mind whether you go the wolfstar route or not, because as much as I love wolfstar, I think a lot of fanfics use it as an excuse not to give a complex relationship to these characters and just ‘they love each other they would die for each other’. Sirius and Remus deserve better than that. In the original series, they are some of the most complex and honestly the most damaged characters.

I was so pleased when I first read the prank chapters almost a year ago (god, has it been a year? It feels like yesterday). I was mentally preparing myself for a big dramatic fight, followed by a big depressing tale of distance, followed by a big dramatic reunion of love and everything being forgotten. And not shitting on those stories at all… but they just feel so unrealistic? Your story feels like something that would actually happen, and I feel like both characters reactions felt so perfect and understandable. I love how the prank completely destroyed their relationship, and now through events in the book, they are building that trust back little by little. Maybe with something more? Lol, no this is canon to me now, honestly whatever you choose I will be 1000% supportive because these characters are your babies and the world is so lucky that you deign to share them with us.

Every time you upload a chapter I create a dozen alternate endings in my head, guessing what the next chapter will be. And yours is 10 times as good every. Single. Time. Probably my fault. I get wrapped up in Sirius and lily friendship stuff and forget other characters exist. When you uploaded schoolboys and their secrets, I felt like I was in a dream lol.

Anyway, I’m so excited for the next chapter, but absolutely no pressure. I just think you’re amazing and was kind of bored so figured I would write to my favourite person on the planet. Sorry if this is kind of long.

I started off as a Jily fan and very quickly became a Wolfstar fan too. I think the dynamic between these characters is fascinating- the whole star and moon, both rejected in different ways, the mystery around the prank, even the fact that in canon during the first war they suspected each other is really fascinating from an attachment perspective and I feel like canon marauders fics have done an amazing job of explaining how that happened? Also the allusions (albeit vehemently denied by she who must not be named) to them being a couple in canon - quarrelling like an old married couple, lie low at Lupin’s, buying Christmas presents together, the 40 line stare - even the actors and director of PoA thought they were a couple! I could keep going 👌💕

I liked Tonks as a character at the start - she’s great! Her backstory is excellent too. I just don’t think Remadora works at all. Romance is not JKR’s forte in Harry Potter books, let’s face it.

But here especially, we know she basically didn’t start off planning on Remadora happening, but wanted to quash rumours of Wolfstar being canon. It therefore feels extremely rushed and not thought through and just not engaging?

I don’t think it’s her intention at all, but canon Remadora sounds like Remus doesn’t want to marry Tonks and is almost forced into it and then panics and regrets it. I know in fact it’s meant to be that he DOES like her and just thinks he’s not good enough and then panics the baby will be better off without him, and he DOES come back to her but I personally hate that part. Like if my husband acted like that I’d be so unimpressed no matter what his excuse???? It is not a good sign lads!

Plus, Tonks looses her personality once she marries? Starts off funny and pink haired and possibly not intentionally quite queer coded, and dies brown haired and essentially in one of the only roles JK gives women - martyred mother… I don’t like it.

I like Tonks. I like Remus. I don’t like them together? If she had written them differently I might, and I’m sure there’s some brilliant fanfics that are miles better than canon.

James and Lily work for Phoenix Radio, a radio station that finds its existence threatened by the successful Riddle Radio. When asked to brainstorm an idea for a new show, Lily comes up with a show in which two exes discuss the aftermath of their break-up. Obviously, so Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall decide, she and James are perfect to play the part. The only problem? They never actually dated. A fake exes AU that leads to so much more drama than you might expect.

Hi anon! Thank you so much for your question! Obviously, I love Jily and I am glad you like my interpretation of them! ❤️

In all honesty, I think that all of us make mistakes and James Potter was an infatuated, teenage boy who did something he should not have done in an attempt to ask out the girl he fancied, while also not wanting to lose face in front of a crowd of people, seeing as he was “the cool guy”.

This does not mean that his behaviour is excusable and I certainly think this is something that he and Lily would have addressed. Personally, I imagine that James would have apologized for his action, very badly right after - which did not necessarily help him, because she would have been fuming still - and - after some reflection and conversations with his parents and maybe some of his friends too - in a much more mature and aware manner.

Clearly, I am very fond of both James and Lily, meaning that I wear rose-coloured glasses around them a lot of the time, but I am also a teacher and see this exact demographic of teenage boys and girls every day. Not to mention, that adults are as fallible and make tons of errors too.

I think the important thing - when doing something you should not have - is that you take accountability and recognize that you should have handled things better. What I know from canon is that James Potter was a Gryffindor, that he was a Quidditch Captain, that he was appointed Head Boy, that he was an intelligent young man, that he would rather die than betray his friends, that he became an Animagus to help his suffering werewolf friend, that he was there for his outcast best friend, that he married (Muggleborn) Lily - who always saw the best in people, but also recognized their faults - was a loving father to his son and died protecting two of the people he loved most, facing their enemy without a wand, knowing that he would not survive this encounter.

Rather than looking at his teenage errors, I would like to look at his growth and admire the fact that James Potter - as a very young adult - is incredibly brave and must have loved both Lily and Harry more than he did himself, his final action being the ultimate sacrifice in the hopes of stalling Voldemort enough to save their lives.

This - even though this was not the point of this ask - in juxtaposition to Severus Snape who wanted Lily all to himself and did not care if the people she loved most would die, as long as he could have her.

What I thus see is a true, loving and heroic redemption arc, which leaves much to the imagination, something I am incredibly grateful for.

There is no such thing as black and white, the grey area in between is what makes our characters interesting, but I do believe that James and Lily were inherently good people who chose light and love over darkness and hate.

Lily glanced at her husband, admiring the way his forearms flexed as he poured them both a bottle of wine.

It had become a tradition of sorts, ever since they’d met over a bottle.

Not that it had been a meeting of coincidence - Euphemia Potter didn’t like to leave important moments to flimsy things like circumstance. But after their first year together, they’d always made a toast on this day. And today marked four years .

Lily’s stomach knotted with anticipation as James glanced up.

“Four years together, two years married,” he said raising his glass to toast her.

Lily left her glass on the table.

“I can’t toast you love,” she said, biting her lip to keep from grinning.

James looked adorably confused at that announcement, his own glass returning to the original place on the counter.

“What’s the matter beautiful?” he asked, concern furrowing his brow as stepped towards her, his arms finding the familiar place on her hips.

“Nothing James,” she answered truthfully “I just can’t drink wine.”

She saw the moment it hit him. The moment the slight frown on his forehead and concerned eyes underwent metamorphosis to a wide-eyed, cheek-hurting smile of happiness.

“You’re pregnant?” he confirmed in a whisper, as if afraid his voice would shatter the reality.

“We’re having a baby,” Lily answered, her own smile stretching wide to match his.

James let out something between a laugh and a sob as he drew her into a hug. Lily felt the wet press of their cheeks and reached up to wipe his tears only to realise they were both crying.

“You’re going to be an amazing mum,” James murmured into her ear.

“Well then this baby is going to be very lucky with two great parents, because his dads pretty amazing too,” Lily answered, melting into his hug.

“Do you think Remus and Sirius are going to have a tiff over who gets to be godfather?” James grinned.

“I think Remus already knows…or at least has a suspicion,” Lily admitted. “I haven’t told either of them anything, because obviously I wanted to tell you first,” she said, pausing with a smile as she tilted her head up at him, their chests still pressed together from their hug. 

James delayed her next sentence by swooping down for a swift peck.

“But I’m pretty sure he caught me dumping the champagne out last night,” Lily continued, biting her lip. “And then I saw him eyeing my boobs and we both know he’s not checking them out.”

“Where were you dumping your champagne?” James laughed, leaning his forehead down to touch hers.

“In the plant” Lily giggled “If it dies, that’s why.”

James snorted, before gently moving his hands up to cup her breasts.

“I hadn’t noticed them change,” he muttered, looking like the absence of him picking up on a change in Lily’s body was a criminal offence.

“They haven’t yet,” Lily reassured him. “It’s still very early - but you know Dr Remus, I bet he was just checking for all the signs.”

“You were very sensitive the other night,” James hummed, his eyes sparkling mischievously as he brushed his fingers over where here nipples lay beneath her shirt.

Lily shuddered.

“Remus wouldn’t know that,” Lily said coyly. “That’s something only you could know”

“Now I know what to look out for next time,” James said quietly, his hands moving down to the small of her back and pulling her into his chest again.

Next time. Lily liked the sound of that. 

“One kid at a time,” she teased, but her eyes must’ve given her away because James smiled knowingly and drew her into a long kiss.

When she had to come up for a breath, she paused. “How should we tell your mum?”

“I have an idea” James murmured before capturing her lips again.

One kid at a time. But certainly no harm in practising .

“Fleamont, can you get the door darling?” Euphemia called as she stepped into the mud room, tulips in her hands and a smudge of dirt of her cheek.

She hummed softly as she heard the soft steps of her husband making his way to the entrance, but she shucked her shoes off much quicker when she heard the light voice of her daughter-in-law laugh.

“Lily! James!” she said making her way around to greet them. “We weren’t expecting you”. She paused after releasing them from her long hug and looked closer. There was something different about them, Euphemia mused, there was a light in their eyes and a secret in the smile they exchanged. What was–

Her train of thought was cut off as her son answered her.

“No, but we have something for you, so we wanted to drop by” her son answered, handing her a bottle.

Euphemia glanced down where her hand had automatically come up to receive the gift.

It wasn’t just any bottle. It was the same wine Euphemia had sent her son on a chase for, four years ago. And…

Oh.

“ Fleamont ” she breathed, her hand coming to her heart.

She felt her husband move to her side so he could see what had caused such a reaction from his unflappable wife.

hot take no one asked for: atyd is way too canon compliant for the marauders fandom

ok first of all i'd like to clear up some things. i know many people love it, it's a very very important part of the marauders fandom and it's very well written. no hate to enjoyers OR mskingbean89 (whom i respect very much, thank u). the wolfstar is definitely GOLDEN and the jily is adorable. this is a very personal view that i have been thinking about, and felt like sharing. also note that i dropped the fic and only got up till, like, fifth or sixth year

there are multiple things which id like to list from the fic that makes me not like it very much as a person with a lot of marauders hcs that are very much not canon compliant, and that feel like the author is writing from a very 'just entered the fandom cuz of wolfstar lol' understanding. again, absolutely NO hate intended, and ik the writing does NOT indicate how much the person understands about the fandom. also, understanding doesn't matter!! everyone who's part of the fandom is part of the fandom, and that's that.

keep in mind that these are things that I PERSONALLY hc. nothing is canon here in the marauders era fandom and if it is, it smells terrible and as such, everyone will have different ideas

also, while i'm at it, i'd like to compliment some things rq. remus portrayal and character development - PEAK. beautifully written. explanation and portrayal of mary (who's character i didn't really understand before reading atyd) - AMAZING. the relationship between the black brothers also made me cry (THE LETTER SCENE?!?!?! YALL KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABT). also grant is my bbg

here's the list:

hufflepuff dorcas (who also dated pete???) (i hc her to be slytherin and also part of the skittles)

no dorlene (a ship that's basically slightly less popular lesbian wolfstar in terms of how many ppl add dorlene to their stories (a lot))

shy marlene (whereas marlene is usually depicted as very bombastic and explosive and also very much gay). actually i liked this portrayal of marlene which was very well written and also adorable but... idk i don't see marlene as a shy girl

no evan rosier/pandora rosier/(slytherin) dorcas? only barty and regulus (so basically, no slytherin skittles/royal court/pantheon)

on that note, obviously-mean reg? (as in, instead of quietly sneering at people like many of us hc him, he outright shames ppl for being gay) (also i didn't mention barty cuz we all know barty's a little shit)

very toxic sirius (who ignored reg just bc he was sorted into slytherin, who fwb with remus and acted like it was normal and straight (guys fwb w a guy as a giy id bery much not straight), who didn't do much but fuck girls and cheat on them, who was outwardly jealous and mean to christopher, who acted weird and badmouthed grant after learning he and rem used to be tgt)

sirius hating pete (although this makes sense and is a common viewpoint of the harry potter fandom especially that pete is annoying or unlikeable, it feels rly rly cruel and makes sirius even more unlikeable imo cuz WHAT did bbg do to u he's js a kid he hasn't killed no one yet?)

all of these points show that mskingbean89 doesn't seem to pay much attention to characters (or more specifically, the fanon interpretations of characters) other than wolfstar and jily. many of these are key hcs that can be found in 75% of marauders content at least (example, dorlene) and the hcs they have seem straight out of hp (the books). ONE MORE TIME FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK: THERE IS NO ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH THIS. i just personally don't see much of the content i love of the marauders characters (although ik that isn't the point of atyd, as it is wolfstar-centric)

narcissa is a survivor first and foremost and a slytherin all the way. mulan seems like a gryffindor at first glance - running away into battle and defying the role laid out for her, she seems more like sirius than narcissa - but she’s also doing this for her family, for her father, which is literally what narcissa is all about. the song honor to us all gives such narcissa vibes to me. the quiet but still fierce girl that turns into a soldier for her family.

andromeda black | jasmine

this one is more obvious. young princess sick of the world she’s stuck in falls in love with someone far below her station who teaches her about world outside the palace. andromeda and ted tonks anyone? plus jasmine is plenty sneaky and does what needs to be done.

bellatrix black | merida

bella was difficult for me to decide but i chose merida because they’re both headstrong but still care about their families. bella is the only named female death eater and pure blood daughters were expected to be trophy wives, she didn’t exactly fit the mold did she? merida refuses to be contained and i see bellatrix, especially young bella, in her.

pandora rosier | snow white

i always imagine pandora as kind of dreamy. intelligent obviously, but she’s definitely where luna got some of her personality from. she seems like someone who would be content in nature and appreciate the little things, and i feel like she would resonate with snow white.

dorcas meadowes | elsa

dorcas very much strikes me as an independent woman. she has her soft spot (marlene) like elsa does anna, but she’s not afraid to be her own person. i can also definitely see her needing to find herself like elsa does, especially when she finds herself on the opposite side of there war from her best friends.

marlene mckinnon | moana

marlene is definitely a gryffindor. she’s wild and free and does what makes her happy. i can definitely see moana’s free spirit in her and the determination to do what’s right, even when it’s not the easy thing **cough cough facing down a bunch of death eaters on her own**

lily evans | belle

i feel like this one is obvious. lily loves learning and she’s good at it. she reminds me of belle so much. girl ends up with a guy pining after her who she hates but eventually realizes that he’s not so bad once she gets to know him. like please, that’s literally jily. lilys also really headstrong and will do what she thinks is right, just like belle.

alice fortescue | tiana

alice was also a little difficult for me just because i feel like we don’t know that much about her. but she just gives me such tiana vibes. i feel like she’s definitely hardworking, i mean she becomes an amazing auror soon after graduating hogwarts. she’s kind, but won’t take anybody’s shit.

mary macdonald | anna

i feel like mary is just the kindest soul ever and will help anyone who needs it unless they give her a reason not too. she’s the friend that won’t stop reaching out to you if you’re being self destructive and trying to ice everyone out (see what i did there). her heart is huge and she sees the good in people.

Not only does it have James and Lily giving Sirius the love and attention and wooing he absolutely deserves, BUT Sirius can also be having major crisis at the same time. Sirius freaking out because he is already dealing with an inappropriate crush on his best friend, but now he’s also developing an EVEN MORE inappropriate crush on his best friend’s wife is just such a good time!! And it can include so many of my favourite tropes from the misunderstandings and mutual pining and obviousness. Wedding Jitters by @siriuslystarbucks has this kind of plot and its amazing! Maybe even my fav jilypad fic of all time.

Hot jilypad smut is always a winner. All three of them are far too attractive. Some favs in this catagory are Shh by penknife and Dark-haired men by julestales, Royalty by @jmagnabo92

Jilypad being brilliant, ruthless, capable and far too protective and loyal to each other during the war is another catagory of fics I love. These are two of my faves The Rule of Three by Ahida and Le Mot Vagabond by ironicallyinternational (both WIPs but moving toward  jilypad).

The three of them raising Harry together. I love the wholesomeness of this trope. But also love Pen’s metas on the three of them just being the hottest parents ever (which I want to link to but now can't find 😭😭 why is tumblr's search function like this 😭). And if raising Harry is paired with Jily trying to get Sirius into bed / a relationship with them (like type 1) then all the better!

(this turned into a bit of an unintentional list if my fav jilypad fics - I feel like they are always getting lost in my bookmarks so yay for a useful reference tool! Also I missed a whole bunch I am sure and there are probably another bunch I am yet to discover :))

And now onto the types of (or more ideas for) stories I would like to write or (preferably given my too long list of WIPs and lack of time) encourage someone to write so I can read haha:

I really want an atmospheric slow burn jily to jilypad story where the war takes a particularly nasty turn and to protect Harry, the three adults take Harry into hiding in the middle of nowhere. All they have is each other, they’re living off the land because they can’t be spotted even by muggles and maybe they aren’t allowed to use magic in case its traced. And by all rights they should be bored out of their minds, but they are just so grateful that they are all still alive. And Sirius, James and Lily just get closer and closer and the tension just builds and builds until suddenly it just snaps.

I’ve also fallen in love with war fic idea kind inspired by the Pearl Harbour movie (and also very much inspired by the Care of Magical Shippers podcast episode on Lilypad). James and Lily are together but James gets captured by death eaters and everybody think he's dead. Sirius and Lily lean on each other, grieving together, protecting each other and helping each other move on... then *things* happen between them. And they are riddled with guilt but James is dead, right? and surely he'd want them to be happy. But then James turns up alive! And everyone is drowning in guilt and feelings, both Sirius and James try to step out of the way of the other, because they love eo so much and want the other to be happy (even if it means they end up alone without either of the people they love). And Lily can't bring herself to make a decision because she loves them both so much. Everything is a big tangled mess until they release that nobody has to step aside as all three of them love each other, and its all gooey and happy in the end!

I know there are more too but I'm running out of time and this is way more than I expected to write so this will do :)

I hate Wolfstar just as much as I hate Jilypad. I don’t get why Sirius needs to be clubbed in with one of the marauders. He love James like a brother and their friendship was so beautiful and now that people have turned it sexual it honestly just makes me hate it and sometimes even hate him. I would rather see Sirius paired with Marlene or Mary or someone else because he deserves all the love in the world, and no James or Lily wouldn’t be able to provide that to him. I can’t see Sirius hooking up with either of them if only one of them died either. Fandom likes to sexualize every relationship but I will die on this hill Jily and Remus had no sexual feelings for Sirius and that’s what made everything that more tragic. Losing a lover is a typical story and so boring. Losing a best friend that cared for you so much that loved you like a brother and then gaining a sister that probably fussed over him like older sister would have been that much more tragic. It’s much more beautiful. Adding in the sexual relationship just ruins it and makes it a basic typical story and so boring.

This I got to disagree with you on.

I don’t know, there’s something so pure and amazing with Jilypad. Like Sirius was obviously close with both of them, amazingly close. He loved Harry as though he were his own. I can see it if written right with the three of them just being a nice cozy little family.

But, ultimately, I like writing Sirius having his own partner and not sharing with anyone. But I’m not adverse to reading a story where Jilypad is done beautifully, if that makes sense.

But I agree with you that in canon, neither Jily nor Remus had Sirius any sexual feelings towards Sirius.

you tackled that tonks/lily post so gently, so elegantly, I am in awe. (also I wrote tonks / lily for efficiency sake but I do think it would be an interesting ship to explore!). for me - my priority in HP is sibling relationships tbh and FRIENDS. like I wrote a romance and 80% of it was about platonic relationships. also - I dislike how people are like 'mlm is for straight women!' and erase the fact that so many women writing mlm are queer (that was in a reply re: wolfstar), as shown by statistics (which you probably have, you are so clever!)

ahhh thank you that means a lot! glad my hard-earned wisdom from my (one year's 😂) long experience shipping both remadora and wolfstar is coming in handy LMAO. but seriously - fandom Means Something to so many people and that's wonderful, that shared passion and excitement and joy and connection and vulnerability, but the flip side of that, when it means different things to different people, the "why don't you see this the way i do?" / "how can you not care about this as much as i do?" / "why does this not mean the same thing to you as it does to me?" hits so much harder. i get it, it's a horrid feeling!

but i've realized that what often comes across as remadora bashing/ erasure from some wolfstar folks is really them trying to say, in maybe not so many words, that canon acknowledgement / a happy ending for wolfstar would really have meant a lot to me, and therefore i am creating in fic what i would have wanted to see on the shelf/on the screen, just these small ordinary happinesses that's been denied same-sex couples over and over and over and over, in mainstream media and in real life.

and conversely, often what remadora shippers are trying to say is that remus and tonks, individually and together, mean a lot to me too, and so it hurts to see tonks' character sidelined/ assassinated even more than it already was in the books, it hurts to see it repeatedly insinuated that just because it's het m/f makes it automatically less queer, less 'cool,' less valid, less worthy of thoughtful consideration and affirmation and celebration, especially now that canon is long dead and buried and the fandom has really become its own thing.

(i don't know the jegulus and jily fandoms well enough to say, but.. you get the idea)

are gay people and same-sex relationships discriminated against? absolutely. are women a marginalized group? for sure. what about bi people, especially bi folk in m/f relationships? oh gosh don't get me started.

but. one side claims misogyny, the other claims homophobia, something something 'protecting male friendships,' something something biphobia, … it's tiring. it's the oppression olympics and i'm not about that (especially in this fandom! this fandom!!! of all places!). i'm tired. everyone has scars and hurts and is just trying to have a nice relaxing self-indulgent time. i would love for more people to read/write femslash, fic about the actually unlikable or morally complicated characters, and dark fic, but more than that i want people to enjoy themselves and be happy in fandom! ship and let ship. write whatever you want. don't want to read it? don't read it. fandom is for joy and silliness and fun. and for writing and gifting me james/lily/peter fic, obviously 😊

OKAY WOW SOAPBOX. i have feelings about ship wars, especially of the political moralizing and activism sort.

anyway yes gen fic is another area that's so hard to find a community for. AO3 already does better than most in having the & tag (the platonic 'regulus & sirius' made it into the top 10 tags of fics written last year! amazing) but it's inconsistently tagged: this first war longfic i'm currently reading, Power the Dark Lord Knows Not, is far more sirius & james and sirius & regulus, heck even remus & peter and sirius & peter, than it is wolfstar, but the slash ship is the only one tagged -- this is a delightfully chaotic minerva & peeves oneshot that's not tagged -- and ... even if it IS tagged, who really goes looking for remus & professor binns fanfiction? i'm a little sad that genuary never really came back after that first year too. ah well.
